Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), also known as autologous conditioned plasma, is a concentrate of platelet rich plasma protein derived from patients own blood that has been centrifuged to remove red blood cells. PRP therapy uses injections of concentration of patients own platelets to accelerate the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints. In this way, PRP injections use each individual patients own healing system to improve musculoskeletal problems.
Although not considered standard practice a growing number of people are turning to PRP injections to treat osteoarthritis of knee joints. There is potential for PRP to enhance cartilage regeneration as well as reduce catabolic factors that lead to cartilage degradation. Recent evidence suggest that PRP injection may be an effective treatment in managing pain associated with knee osteoarthritis. PRP can be combined with other pain management methods to enhance the rehabilitation process.
Patients who have had knee injections with PRP see a reduction in pain and stiffness as well as improvement in knee function at 6weeks and 3months. At the sixth month mark patients may need a repeat of the PRP injection.
PRP injection therapy is available at Subang Orthopaedic clinic.
